Get Involved

There are lots of ways you can get involved with the Trust, through volunteering, membership, donations or coming sailing with us.  As a charity we rely on people in our community to support us and get involved in helping us to achieving our goals.  Discover ways in which you can support us below.

By becoming a member you will be contributing to the sustainability of Sir Peter Blakes legacy, helping us connect New Zealanders to our iconic vessels Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand, through school curriculum and leadership programmes, group charters and racing experiences, and ensuring these boats continue to inspire and education the next generation.

The work we do on board our vessels can be hugely beneficial to those who participate. This year we will work with more than 900 young New Zealanders delivering our youth programmes that bring to life key values such as leadership, teamwork, communication, determination, courage and respect. Each team member learns a variety of roles they need to perform in order to help the yachts function.

Our programmes and ongoing vessel maintenance is partly funded by programme fees, racing experiences and community or corporate charters, however for most of the funds required to keep the yachts at the high level of safety and functionality and to run our organization we rely on generosity.

We are looking for the support of people who wish to connect with Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand and share our commitment to preserving the past in order to shape the future.

As a charity, The New Zealand Sailing Trust relies on volunteers to keep functioning. Our Board of Trustees are all volunteers who dedicate many hours to the Trust ensuring its success. We are always looking for volunteers to help us achieve our goals. Some of the ways in which you can get involved and volunteer are:

Funding Volunteers – The Trust is very keen to increase volunteer support around fundraising , whether it be support for sponsorships, corporate contacts, grant funding or events for raising funds if you have experience with these and would like to help we would love to hear from you.

Office Support – Volunteering in the office would involve jobs such as funding applications, provisioning the boats for multiday trips, helping compile manuals, working with members, compiling race information, there is always a lot to do!

Volunteer Deckhands – we run many trips with young people if you have experience sailing we have a limited number of opportunities where you can join us as a volunteer deck hand. This position provides additional help on board for the crew with sailing, catering, teaching young people.

Vessel Maintenance – if you are an experienced sailor or have a trade that you think may help us out with the maintenance of our vessels we would love to hear from you. The repairs and maintenance on these vessels is one of our main costs and anything that we can do to reduce this would be of great benefit to the trust. There may also be opportunity to help out with general maintenance of the vessels such as cleaning of gear and yearly maintenance jobs.
