Tīkapa Moana Youth Explorer - a Sailing and Kayaking Adventurous Journey

Come on a journey of self-discovery. You will have a greater awareness of the environment and the importance of protecting it, whilst discovering new horizons around the Hauraki Gulf.

Tīkapa Moana Youth Explorer is a 5 day Sailing and Kayaking Adventurous Journey. Tīkapa Moana Youth Explorer challenges all students between 13-18 years of age to find the grit and determination to succeed. They will dig deep to find ways to collaborate and complete both individual and shared goals. They will learn new life skills, forge friendships and know that the experience has been truly life changing.

This programme is open to all young New Zealanders.  It also meets the requirements for the practice and qualifying journey for Silver Award and practice journey or residential for Gold Award for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award.

Two nights will be spent sailing on either Lion New Zealand, or Steinlager 2. These boats are significant to New Zealand sailing history and were sailed around the world by Sir Peter Blake in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. Everybody on board will have the opportunity to learn to sail the boats, help with the preparation of meals and sleep aboard. They will be put into a watch rotation system to learn about different aspects of sailing, put into practice reading the weather, plan our destination and to work together to sail the boat to that destination.  We engage everyone in beach clean ups, raft building, problem solving or communication activities to further develop skills and enhance personal growth.

Two nights will be spent on the water with Auckland Sea Kayaks, where students will learn how to kayak and camp in a safe, fun and supportive environment. They will get the opportunity to lead and be led by their fellow peers under the guidance of an experienced and qualified instructor. They will also put to use their map reading and navigational skills, follow Leave No Trace and gain understanding for how each of the 7 principles applies to the present environment and their day to day lives.

Students are welcome to book this journey even if they are not doing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award.

Will this programme be sufficient for completing both of my qualifying and practice journey at the same time?

The 5 day programme is sufficient for BOTH the practice and qualifying journey for Bronze and Silver.

The 5 day programme is sufficient for EITHER the practice or qualifying journey for Gold, and is sufficient for the residential project.
