SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE OUTDOORS

2.5 DAYS SAILING WITH NZ SAILING TRUST AND 2.5 DAYS KAYAKING WITH AUCKLAND SEA KAYAKS.

In January 2023 the Hine Moana programme has joined forces with Tīkapa Moana to offers young women and men an inspirational trip to build self confidence, improve communication skills, develop new and long lasting friendships, all in a non threatening supportive environment.

The students will be empowered and reflect upon their journey with self respect and respect to Kaitiakitanga.  A number of young women join us through available bursaries, making this lifechanging experience available to all.

Our youth development programmes - Hine Moana and Tīkapa Moana - are delivered over 5 days of sailing and kayaking.  Our programmes are for 13-18 year olds - many join us from low-mid decile schools, and various community groups to build their confidence in the outdoors.

New Zealand Sailing Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks are both outdoor education, youth development and tourism providers operating in the Tīkapa Moana / Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Our programmes encourage both New Zealanders and international Manuhiri to get active in the great outdoors.

The NZ Sailing Trust was established with a vision of creating opportunities for New Zealanders to share a unique maritime experience on Sir Peter Blake’s iconic Whitbread Round the World Yachts.  Auckland Sea Kayaks take pride in delivering a professional service with safety as a high priority.

5 DAY SAILING AND KAYAKING PROGRAMME

Our focus is on personal achievement, empowerment and leadership to reflect on their own journey with respect to self and respect to Kaitiakitanga. Our women role models assist to map out these journeys and provide context of what is possible.

Two nights are spent on the water with Auckland Sea Kayaks, where students learn how to kayak and camp in a safe, fun and supportive environment. They have the opportunity to lead and be led by their fellow peers under the guidance of an experienced and qualified female instructor. The students put their map reading and navigational skills to use, follow Leave No Trace and gain understanding for how each of the 7 principles applies to the present environment and their day to day lives.

Two nights are spent sailing on the internationally renowned maxi yachts - either Lion New Zealand or Steinlager2. Everybody on board has the opportunity to learn to sail the boats, help with the preparation of meals and sleep aboard. They are put into a watch rotation system to learn about different aspects of sailing, practice reading the weather, plan our destination and work together to sail the boat to that destination.  We engage everyone in beach clean ups, raft building, problem solving or communication activities to further develop skills and enhance personal growth.

To reinforce the young people's learning on the water, we present an opportunity for our participants to identify with young women and men as role models to talk with them, unpack the learnings of the journey, share with them ideas for possible career opportunities in the outdoor industry and learn that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.  We are privileged to have Bianca Cook as The NZ Sailing Trust’s ambassador.  Bianca competed in the last in an international crew in The Ocean Race.  We will have Lynn Paterson join us for part of the kayak journey.  She circumnavigated New Zealand in a kayak.
