Steinlager 2
Steinlager 2 was built for the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World race, this was Peter Blakes 5th attempt at the fully crew circumnavigation race. Steinlager 2 and her amazing sailors went on to win an unprecedented full sweep of all six legs of the 1989/90 Whitbread around the world race. Never had this been done before nor since. Not only winning on their handicap but winning overall honours as well.
A yacht like no other
Built for Sir Peter Blake’s fifth Whitbread attempt, Steinlager 2 was shaped by a crew of sailors who helped design what they would race.
Longer, faster, and fiercely engineered, she broke from convention, her innovations kept secret until it was too late for rivals to catch up.
Her first big test? The Fastnet Race — where she flew past the fleet and proved she was built not just to compete, but to win.
Built to redefine the race
Steinlager 2 was Sir Peter Blake’s fifth attempt at the Whitbread Round the World Race - and his most ambitious yet.
Designed by Kiwi legend Bruce Farr and shaped by a handpicked crew of sailors, engineers, and thinkers, the yacht was a fusion of performance and precision. Every crewmember could fix what broke, adjust what shifted, and sail through whatever the sea delivered.
Lessons from Blake’s earlier trimaran, Steinlager 1, informed the build - innovative materials, rigorous testing, and hard-won insight from a voyage around Australia.
Blake pushed for changes: a longer hull, a fractional rig, and subtle design shifts kept hidden from rival teams. What emerged was a yacht tuned for speed, balance, and dominance.
At the Fastnet Race, Steinlager 2 made her debut - fast, sure, and unmistakably ahead of the pack. It was the first of many victories, but perhaps the sweetest: proof that their vision was right.
Total victory
In the 1989/90 Whitbread, Steinlager 2 made history - winning all six legs, on handicap and overall.
No yacht had ever done it before.
