We are a conscientious operator that believes in looking after our environment. To have the privilege of going ashore to some of the wonderful pest free islands in the Hauraki Gulf, we as guests have to take some responsibility to protect these islands from predators.

Why you need to check your gear

The Hauraki Gulf is a nationally significant marine park, home to many of New Zealand’s rarest and most endangered species—including tuatara, takahe, shore plover, and kiwi. Many islands are pest-free or partially pest-free, providing vital habitats for these species and supporting natural recovery efforts.

Pests such as rats, mice, insects, weeds, and soil-borne diseases can be inadvertently transported via footwear, gear, or boats, threatening these precious ecosystems. For example:

  • Rats can squeeze through 12mm gaps, mice through 7mm.

  • Insects may hide in your gear or bags.

  • Weed seeds, soil, and plant material can be hitchhikers.

The impact of pests

  • Predation on native birds, reptiles, and insects.

  • Displacement of native species by invasive animals like Argentine ants and skinks.

  • Spread of plant diseases like kauri dieback.

  • Formation of invasive weed forests that threaten native plants.

Customer responsibilities

  • Pack food in sealed containers; tape cardboard boxes shut.

  • Ensure all footwear and gear are thoroughly cleaned and soil-free.

  • Check camping and overnight gear for stowaways, especially if stored away.

  • Inspect seedlings, potting mix, and plant matter for hitchhikers.

  • Seal gear and food after packing and keep it closed until arrival.
