One Outstanding

The story is centered on Sir Peter Blake’s victory of the race after many attempts, and the battle that emerged between the two ketches Steinlager 2 and Grant Dalton’s Fisher & Paykel.

One Outstanding is a tribute to Sir Peter which includes unseen early footage of his sailing endeavours and success's in the America’s Cup. In addition to Sir Peter, the film features, Steinlager 2 crewman Brad Butterworth, F&P’s skipper Grant Dalton, Bruce Farr (designer of both ketches) Bob Fisher ( journalist ) and Lady Pippa Blake.

This is a film I made in 2004 about the 1989/90 Whitbread Around the World Yacht Race.

Maiden movie and Q&A

Sponsored by Volvo Cars NZ and supported by Yachting NZ

Maiden is the story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook in charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World in 1989. Tracy's inspirational dream was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure, and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up: she remortgaged her home and bought a secondhand boat, putting everything on the line to ensure the team made it to the start line. Although blessed with tremendous self-belief Tracy was also beset by crippling doubts and was only able to make it through with the support of her remarkable crew. With their help she went on to shock the sport world and prove that women are very much the equal of men.

Public Open Days on Lion New Zealand

Sir Peter Blake's Lion New Zealand yacht which sailed in the 1985/86 Whitbread Round the World yacht race has just had an extensive restoration that was completed in March this year and has been returned to the Waitemata Harbour.

To celebrate her restoration and return to the water we have two public open days planned this weekend. Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October, 10am to 2pm at Market Square, Viaduct Harbour.

Please share this opportunity with friends and family. We welcome you down to take a look over the results of the restoration and come meet the NZ Sailing Trust Crew. A gold coin donation is appreciated.

The restoration included (not limited to) a complete gut of the interior, replacement engineering, all systems, refurbished mast, new keel and rudder. Working alongside Steinlager 2, Lion New Zealand adds valuable capacity back to our youth programmes allowing us to deliver sailing journeys to up to 2,000 participants each year.
