Frequently asked questions
Is a wheely bag or suitcase appropriate for sailing?
No. These bags are a health and safety risk when sailing. They are heavier, take up more space and can easily be dislodged from a bunk while sailing, potentially causing injury. All bags need to be a large soft bag, as per the Equipment list.
What wet weather clothing will my child need?
On the Gear List, it clearly states what wet weather gear is required eg - Waterproof jacket x 1. Please note New Zealand Sailing Trust do provide high quality wet weather sailing jackets and leggings. This is only for the sailing part of the voyage, not for land-based activities.
Will my child need additional food or snacks?
No. There will plenty of healthy food and snacks. If your child is hungry, we will feed them.
How is sea sickness medication managed?
New Zealand Sailing crew have sea sickness medication onboard to administer to students should they need it. This allows us to manage who, when and what dosage students are taking. If students want to provide their own medication, they need to let a crew member know.
Is sailing safe enough to go ahead in bad weather?
Safety is always our highest priority. Our highly experienced Skippers use up-to-date weather forecasting to guide all decisions.
New Zealand Sailing Trust has operated for the past 18 years in a wide range of weather conditions. While some rain is common and expected, it does not prevent the voyages from running safely. Our boats were designed and built for open ocean sailing and have both successfully sailed around the world.
All students are provided with appropriate wet weather gear, including wind and waterproof jackets and pants, to ensure they remain dry, warm, and comfortable while sailing.
Students are required to wear life jackets at all times while the vessel is underway, regardless of weather conditions.
Will the boats be anchored in a sheltered bay or will they remain out at sea each evening?
The safety and comfort of students, supervisors, and crew are always our top priority. Each evening, vessels anchor in sheltered locations, providing a calm and comfortable environment, and we plan our routes to ensure the best possible conditions throughout the journey.
